It was a dreary Sunday morning when the mighty warriors assembled to do battle with mother nature, their fellow runners and themselves. The sky hung heavy with leaden clouds, a damp chill was in the air. Would it rain? Was it getting colder? Am I ready? These questions and more filled the thoughts of our intrepid band as they stretched, meditated and secretly cried for their mothers. Some chose the noble 5K, others sacrificed themselves upon the altar of the 10K while still others fled in fear.
Suddenly the clarion call rang out "runners to the starting line!". The time for doubts was past. Last minute prayers were uttered, laces were checked, headphones adjusted and then came the horn, GO! As the initial chaos sorted itself out, the runners settled into their paces by ones and twos. Breathing settled and muscles lengthened, the battle was joined.
Chapter members Tom Huffman, Racheal Leask, Brent Nasworthy and Chris Schilling as well as retired CWO Adrian Kavanagh of Sector, Master Chief Todd Holcomb of Sector and Master Chief Kevin Leask of the Academy took part in this epic struggle for the benefit of veterans served by VFW Post 7666 in Guilford, CT.
